Congratulations to Elite BC - 2010 1st Place NJLBC Champs! Sitting on top of the standings with 36 points (and the outcome of the final NJLBC bout April 3rd) Elite boxers won seven bouts, had two Division champions and two runner-ups. The point system included "participation" rewards for boxers showing up on weight and competing. Each club received +1 when their boxer was ready, and -1 for a boxer who failed to show or was dq'd for being overweight. Club's received +1 for each victory, +3 for each runner-up place, and +5 for each division champion.
Second Place went to Dover Boxing Club with 32 points. Third Place went to Bayonne PAL with 28 points. Trophies will be presented to the club's at the March 12th NJGG show at Garfield High School. Other top clubs were Middletown PAL (24pts), Combatt - Newark (23pts), Gladiator Gym - Newark (21pts), Brick City Hitters - Newark (20pts), Plainfield Boxing Academy (19pts), Trenton PAL (16pts), Plainfield 5-Star Gym (15pts), and Union City Boxing Club (15pts).
The NJLBC would like to salute all the boxers and clubs for a great turnout. Drop-outs usually make planning shows difficult as the previous year's events had been declining. For the NJLBC Tournament, 146 of 164 boxers made it to the scale and were ready to go = that's a remarkable 89% of boxers showing up on weight, and 83% matches scheduled were competed for the 2010 competition. Thanks to all those who participated - the spectators really had something to watch at every show.
Everything's over except Junior Boys Final...Jonathan Serrano of Elizabeth had beaten everybody in the Boys 13/14 Sub Novice 132 Division. Olajawon Fleming of Elite BC - Newark had lost on a cut in his opening bout, but then won all his matches in the Loser's Bracket to get to a match with Serrano. At the Brownstone show on March 1st, all three judges had a winner by one point, except two had Fleming on top. So they'll meet each other once more on Saturday, April 3rd at the rescheduled PBA show at Passaic County Tech in Wayne.
Godson Noel, Brick City Hitters - Newark named Outstanding Sub Novice Boxer...Noel faced Jason Garbiras of Final Round - Whippany at the Brownstone in Paterson on March 1st in the 165 Sub Novice Final. Garbiras had defeated all others to advance through the Loser's Bracket. Noel did not lose in the Tournament. Garbiras came out with a furious rush in the opening round and the two slugged it out to the delight of a packed crowd. Chuck Wepner, Bobby Cyz, and NY Giants Super Bowl famous OJ Anderson were in attendance as Noel stopped Garbiras at 1:18 of the second round. The former Giant Anderson presented the Outstanding Boxer award to Godson for his achievement.
Terrence Jenkins, Gladiator Gym - Newark named Outstanding Novice Boxer...Jenkins defeated all opponents in the 178 Novice Division, but had to travel to Trenton on March 5th in an add-on bout of the opening Golden Gloves show to do it. Terrence defeated Greg Quarantello (Unattached) by Decision to take the 178 Novice crown. Jenkins now moves up from the Novice to Open Class and will be in the same company now as teammate and USA Boxing ranked Ibn Akbar Richardson. Lisandro Tupete, 2010 NJLBC Champ is also in this Division.
Ulysses Woodard became the 152 Novice Champ as the snow storm wiped out the necessary bouts needed to be held prior to the start of the NJGG. Since Woodard had defeated all other opponents, and is moving down to the 141 weight category, the Tournament Committee did not want him to risk injury by not making him go up-and-down to finish one NJLBC weight group and then compete in the NJGG. Jermeil Baugh of Plainfield BA defeated Shakir Dunn, Gladiator Gym - Newark in the Loser's Bracket and was named co-champion. Also on March 1st,
Robert Terry, Bayonne PAL defeated Michael Peppen, IC Stars - Jersey City to win the Men's 152 Sub Novice Championship
